Imię i nazwisko: Tadeusz Dominik

Lived between: 1928-2014

He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1946 to 1951. He received his diploma in 1953 working under Jan Cybis’s guidance. Following his professor, he adopted the rule that unlike a photo, a picture cannot be a copy of nature. While at the Academy, he climbed all steps of his career. Starting in 1951, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Painting, initially as Jan Cybis’s assistant. From 1965, he ran his own studio. In 1979 he received the degree of Professor. He was Dean of the Faculty of Painting twice, in 1958-1959 and 1987-1989. Between 1958 and 1959 he lived in Paris on a scholarship from the French Government. From 1961 to 1962 he was in the US on a scholarship from the Ford Foundation.

Tadeusz Dominik’s first works were figurative paintings called Maternity which won a prize at the famous exhibition in Warsaw Arsenal in 1955. Besides painting, the artist worked with xylography, using vast expanses of white and black. He showed a series of xylographs called Maternity during the Venice Biennial in 1956. In the late 50s, he returned to painting (The Red Garden, Compositions). During the 60s, he enriched his works using texture effects. His painting style, initially expressive and spontaneous, changed in the seventies. His forms became clearer, defined and larger. They began to look like colorful balloons or polka dots and his color palette gradually became brighter and more intense. The artist began to introduce decorative effects, such as consistent repetition of forms and a kind of painted “rasters” which regularly marked the composition fragments (Fruit II). In the course of time, the texture of his paintings became lighter. Using round and oval forms, the artist began to create landscapes depicting his vision of nature – the style he has maintained till now.

Tadeusz Dominik died in 2014 r.
