Agnieszka Borkowska
A young woman representing a modern beauty type is the main character of my paintings. She is usually lost in her own thoughts, focused, makes an impressions of being inaccessible, not present, mysterious. Presented in an undefined interior, often in a closed-up view, she steals all the attention of the spectator who, like an experienced peeping Tom, unnoticeably enters her intimate space with his eyes.
I try to express emotions and thoughts of my heroines, their dilemmas, desires, and fears. In my paintings you can spot almost twin similar characters who do not make any type of contact. I try to refer to the dual nature of women, pay attention to the ambiguous attitudes and perplexities that women experience before making important life decisions. I try to turn away from the popular image of a woman saw a figure reduced to an attractive form that was dominant in art for centuries. I confront this view with an image of a person with her own identity and will, creating characters with reflective nature.
Works of small formats emphasize the intimate nature of the transmitted emotions. They help to enter the personal world of a woman, leaving the viewer alone, face-to-face with her thoughts and emotions.
